How to Begin Fundraising For a Charity

If you belong to a charity organization and like helping out then at some point you will consider raising money for them. This is a much more proactive task and needs commitment and energy. It need not be daunting though. Here are a few simple tips for executing your fund raising mission.
• Decide on what you are comfortable doing, whether that is a physical challenge or organising an event. You will be more motivated and confident your chosen task draws on your strengths
• Make it a test of yourself - people will not sponsor you to have too good or easy time of it, so it should challenge you in some way. For instance, hiking up Mt. Kilimanjaro!
• Use what you've got - what resources do you have around you? Do you know someone who works in a theatre/pub/cinema? Then you might be able to host a quiz night or film screening. What skills do your friends have that you can use if they are willing to give their time? These are all valuable resources that you might be able to utilize.
• Always approach local business for prizes/ donations. It is good to ask for items that may have been slightly damaged in transit. Normally this is just packaging or surface damage and yet the company might not be able to sell it and would therefore be happy to give it to you! These items can be used as raffles prizes and giveaways for quizzes and games.
• Always wear your official t-shirt or clothing for the charity as well as any badges you have. This shows you represent an official group and engenders trust from the public.
• Get a can for can shaking - A "can shake" is the unofficial term for holding the collecting tins as a fundraiser. Make sure you have plenty of these is you are collecting in a public place such as a railway station.
• Get the local paper on board - nothing beats a bit of good publicity for your campaign. The papers love a good story about a local boy/girl doing something for the greater good. It is a wonderful human interest story and worthy of attention. Local journalists are often more than happy to help.
